Bee Facts

What are some important things to know about Texas bees?

  • Most of the time bees consider you landscape. They only sting when you are hurting them or their hive. Bees die after they sting.
  • Honeybees tend to search or certain types of spaces to build hives. The space must have enough room for the comb and the bees. They also need to be uninhabited, dry and protected from wind, heat and cold. Hollow trees and walls and floor joists that are not insulated tend to be prime locations for honeybees to build a hive. Areas that tend to get too hot such as attics and walls that face South are less preferred. Overhanging eaves that face the east and north are commonly chosen as suitable sites for a hive. South and West facing eaves are not however, unless they provide shade so it does not overheat.
  • Bees that inhabit a house will build wax comb and quickly fill it with honey, pollen and their children. If blocked in the bees will die and the wax will melt and release honey that will soak your drywall and damage your home if direct sun hits the spot. If you poison them you will get the same effects including honey that is contaminated and carried home by the other bees in the neighborhood which will poison them or contaminate the honey they make which can end up being the honey you eat.
  • Without bees there would be very few fruits, vegetables and many types of flowers.
